How our roselle powder is grown and produced

Roselle is cultivated on our organic farms in Mkuranga District, Coastal Region, part of the same growing area behind our Mitaranda Organic Project (2016) and Kisele Organic Project (2018). The crop is planted, tended and harvested by our network of more than 50 contracted farmers, most of them rural women trained in organic cultivation methods. No synthetic fertilisers or chemical pesticides are used anywhere in the process; the plants are grown with natural fertiliser, compost and green manure, and protected using bio-pesticides rather than chemical sprays, in line with our wider farming approach.

At harvest, the fleshy red calyces are separated from the seed pod by hand, then dried and milled into a fine powder. Careful drying is what keeps the vivid red colour and sharp, cranberry-like tartness that food and beverage buyers look for, rather than a dull, faded product. Because the crop is harvested and processed close to where it is grown, the calyces move quickly from field to drying to milling, which helps preserve both colour and flavour before the powder is packed for export.

Quality and organic standards

TanzPro Greens operates under the East African Organic Mark (Kilimohai) and is a member of the Tanzania Organic Agriculture Movement (TOAM). Our farms follow Fair Trade principles and are 100% GMO-free, with no synthetic fertilisers or chemical pesticides used at any stage of cultivation. These are the same standards applied across our full range of fresh produce, herbs, spices and organic powders, so roselle buyers are working with the same organic farming system that supplies our other export products.

Because roselle is destined for teas, beverages and food applications, consistency matters as much as colour. We process each batch to keep particle size, moisture content and colour as uniform as possible, so buyers can rely on the same product shipment after shipment rather than reformulating recipes each time a new batch arrives. Our farmers are supplied with certified seeds as part of this approach, supporting a more consistent crop from one harvest to the next.

Packing formats: bulk and private label

Roselle powder is supplied either in bulk for further processing or blending, or packed to a buyer's own retail specification for private label sale. Bulk formats suit importers, tea blenders and food manufacturers who repackage under their own brand, while retail-ready packs suit buyers who want a finished product ready for shelf. Packaging can be arranged using compostable or recyclable materials, in keeping with our wider approach to sustainable packing across all product lines.

Export logistics and the markets we reach

Being dry and shelf-stable, roselle powder travels well over long distances and does not need cold-chain handling, unlike our fresh produce. Orders are prepared to a buyer's specification, packed, and dispatched either by air through Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam, or by sea for larger, shelf-stable bulk shipments where transit time matters less than cost per kilogram.

This makes roselle powder well suited to markets further from East Africa, including Russia and the Gulf states such as Dubai/UAE and Oman, alongside regional buyers across East Africa. Whichever route is used, packing is done to protect colour and moisture content for the length of the journey, so the product arrives in the same condition it left the mill.
