What Organic Farming Means at TanzPro Greens

For us, organic farming starts with what we refuse to use: synthetic fertilisers and chemical pesticides have no place on our farms, whether in the greenhouses at Mitaranda and Kisele or in our open fields. In their place, we rely on bio-pesticides and natural fertilisers to manage pests, disease, and soil fertility.

This is not a shortcut version of conventional farming with a few chemicals removed. It is a different way of managing the whole growing cycle, from the seed we plant to the soil it grows in, built around biological processes rather than synthetic inputs.

The same rules apply across every product line we grow, from greenhouse cherry tomatoes and bell peppers to open-field cabbage, carrots, onions, green beans, and sweetcorn, through to fruit like avocado, pineapple, and passion fruit, and aromatics such as ginger, garlic, and herbs. There is no separate 'organic tier' of production and a conventional one running alongside it.

Building Healthy Soil, Season After Season

Soil health is the foundation of organic yields, so we manage it deliberately rather than leaving it to chance. Crop rotation is used across our fields to break pest and disease cycles and prevent any single crop from exhausting the same nutrients year after year.

Alongside rotation, we use green manure and composting to return organic matter to the soil, feeding it naturally instead of relying on synthetic fertiliser to force short-term yields. Over time, this builds soil that holds water better, supports stronger root systems, and needs less intervention, which is exactly the kind of long-term thinking organic farming demands.

This matters particularly in Mkuranga District, where our soils have not been degraded by decades of heavy chemical use. Managing them organically from the outset, rather than trying to recover already-depleted land, is part of why we can sustain more than 200 tons of production a year without leaning on synthetic shortcuts.

Biological Pest Control Instead of Chemicals

Pests and disease are managed with bio-pesticides and biological pest control methods rather than synthetic sprays. This approach takes more attention and consistency than reaching for a chemical solution, but it protects the soil, the surrounding environment, and the people working on our farms, most of whom are the rural women who make up around 70% of our contracted workforce.

It also protects the produce itself. Buyers sourcing from us are not receiving vegetables or fruit carrying chemical pesticide residues, because those inputs are never used in the first place.

Biological pest control also ties directly back to our sustainability practices, including crop rotation and compostable, recyclable packaging further down the supply chain. Keeping chemical inputs out of the field is only half the picture; we aim to keep the same low-impact approach through harvesting, packing, and dispatch as well.

100% GMO-Free, By Choice

Every crop we grow, from cherry tomatoes and bell peppers to ginger, garlic, and passion fruit, is grown from certified, non-GMO seed. This is a deliberate choice, not an accident of what happens to be available locally. Farmers contracted to TanzPro Greens are supplied with certified seeds as part of our training and support programme, which keeps this standard consistent across Mitaranda, Kisele, and every smallholder in our network.

Supplying certified seed directly to farmers also removes a common source of inconsistency in contract farming, where growers might otherwise save or source seed independently. By controlling this step ourselves, we can stand behind a simple, unqualified claim: everything we export is 100% GMO-free.

The Standards We Hold Ourselves To

TanzPro Greens is a member of TOAM, the Tanzania Organic Agriculture Movement, and our farming practices align with the East African Organic Mark, known locally as Kilimohai. We also operate on Fair Trade principles across our contract-farming relationships, which shapes how we work with our 50-plus farmers, not just how we grow.

We are straightforward about what this does and does not mean: these are the standards we hold today, and we do not claim certifications we do not have. What we can say plainly is that no synthetic fertiliser or chemical pesticide is used anywhere in our production, from Mkuranga's greenhouses to the open fields around them.

For buyers who need to map our practices against their own compliance requirements, we are happy to explain exactly where TOAM membership, Kilimohai alignment, and Fair Trade principles fit, and where they do not, rather than let assumptions fill the gaps.

Trust in organic claims comes down to what happens on the ground, not what appears on a label. Our farms in Mkuranga District are open to inspection by buyers and partners, our farmers are trained and supported directly by our team, and our methods, crop rotation, composting, bio-pesticides, and GMO-free seed, are consistent across every site we operate.

For export partners in Seychelles, the Gulf, and beyond, that consistency is the point: the same organic standards applied on a small greenhouse plot in Kisele are applied across our entire supply base, so what leaves Julius Nyerere International Airport reflects how the crop was actually grown.
