Growing cabbage in Tanzania's coastal soils

Our cabbage is grown in Mkuranga District, on Tanzania's Coastal Region, where farmland has stayed largely free of heavy industrial input. This is the same base that supports our Mitaranda Organic Project (2016) and Kisele Organic Project (2018), the two sister farms that give us the scale to plan bulk cabbage orders in advance.

The crop is tended by our network of more than 50 contracted farmers, around 70 percent of them rural women trained in organic methods and supplied with certified seed. That combination of trained labour and a guaranteed market for the harvest is what keeps head size and density consistent across growing cycles.

Growing across both the Mitaranda and Kisele projects gives us more planting windows than a single farm would allow, which helps smooth out supply for buyers who need cabbage on a recurring schedule rather than a single seasonal delivery.

Organic growing practices

Cabbage is grown without synthetic fertilisers or chemical pesticides, relying instead on crop rotation, green manure and composting to keep soils productive, and on bio-pesticides for pest control. Irrigation is managed through drip systems or rain-fed supply depending on the plot, which is standard practice across our organic acreage.

This approach underpins our East African Organic Mark (Kilimohai) status and our membership in TOAM, the Tanzania Organic Agriculture Movement, and it is the same standard applied across our full vegetable range.

We also operate on Fair Trade principles for the cabbage programme, which shapes how our contracted farmers are paid and supported. For buyers, that means the crop comes from growers with a direct interest in maintaining head quality season after season, not just meeting a one-off order.

Field grading and trimming

Cabbage is harvested and field-graded for head density, size and outer leaf condition, with loose or damaged heads pulled before they reach the packhouse. Outer leaves are trimmed to a clean, uniform head, which reduces bulk and protects the crop through handling.

Because cabbage is a heavier, hardier vegetable than most of what we export, grading focuses on consistency of head weight and firmness across a load rather than delicate handling, which keeps the process efficient at bulk volumes.

We can grade to size bands on request, whether a buyer wants larger heads for wholesale markets or a tighter, more uniform size for retail packing. Confirming size and weight specification before the first shipment keeps later bulk orders straightforward to plan against.

Packing and export logistics

Once an order is confirmed, cabbage is packed in food-grade export cartons or bulk crates sized to the buyer's specification, with packaging chosen to be compostable or recyclable where practical. Volumes are scaled to match the order, from a single pallet to full container loads.

Cabbage moves from our packhouse via Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam for air freight, or by sea for larger and less time-sensitive bulk orders. Because cabbage holds up better in transit than more delicate leafy crops, sea freight is a realistic option for buyers prioritising cost over speed.

We agree freight method, carton or crate weight, and labelling requirements with each buyer before dispatch, since these details vary by destination market and by whether the cabbage is headed for wholesale or retail shelves.
